During this battle, General Ulysses S. Grant was able to trap the Confederates inside Vicksburg due to its geography- the city was placed on a bluff two hundred feet above the Mississippi River. This siege put extreme stress on the Confederacy and cut its access to the Mississippi River, which was vital for transportation guns and munitions.
