Iran and Iraq weren't at peace since before, they had multiple disputes and arguments. One major dispute that went on for, was the al-Arab waterway which is the water border of Iraq and Iran, which the Iraqi president, pres. Ṣaddām Ḥussein wanted to take control of. Meanwhile,this president wanted to make Iraq the dominant power of the region. He wanted take advantage of the growing government of Iran from its revolution. Iran was somehow still weak from the revolution and still a lot of disagreements and changes were going on that time. in other words, Iran was still unstable which took the interest of Iraq to invade them.

On 22nd September of 1980, Iraq took Iran by surprise and Invaded the Iranian province of Khuzestan. the forces of Iraq was doing well in the beginning, but but before they could take major action further, they were stopped and were forced out of Iran.

In July 18 1988, the war ended, when Iran accepted UN Resolution. in August of 1990, Iraq and Iran restored their diplomatic relations, and Iraq agreed to Iranian terms for the settlement of the war.
