1430 CE - 1591 CE The Songhay Empire was founded by Sunni Ali and took control of the decaying West African Mali Empire. It traded extensively from key trade cities like Timbuktu similar to that of the Mali Empire. The emperor's all supported the development and spread of Islam, and thus they built mosques and universities for the faith. (4.2)
