This battle was important for being the first major land battle between the Confederate and Union forces, and occurred in Northern Virginia, just about 20 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. It was a confederate victory, and the location is especially important because the Confederates had won a major battle so near to the Union's capital- this scared many Northerners and foreshadowed a long and violent war.
