On this day, South Africa formally declared independence from the United Kingdom, who had held it since the Scramble for Africa in the late 19th century. South Africa remained a British Commonwealth (like Canada or Australia) until it completely severed its ties to the UK in the 1960s. The republic they established was darkened by its disenfranchisement and segregation of the black population through a system called Apartheid. It took the serious work of activists and civil rights leaders to abolish Apartheid at the end of the 20th century.
