It was founded by Saint Marinus, who wished to establish a monastery in the mountains which would be free of Roman control. While San Marino has seen brief occupations by external forces, its sovereignty has never truly been challenged. Because of San Marino's history as a religious haven, and because of its steadfast independence and dedication to democracy, the nations which surround it have always respected it. When Napoleon conquered Italy in 1805, he left the tiny state of San Marino untouched.)
