1 gen 1898 anni - Heroin
Descrizione:
Synthesized first by English chemist C.R. Alder Wright, then marketed by Bayer alongside aspirin just before the turn of the 20th century, heroin was initially supposed to be a remedial thing. Intended to be a nonaddictive, cough-suppressing alternative to morphine in an era that saw more deaths from TB and pneumonia than most other things, the “heroic” drug wasn’t expected to be as horrible as it was, and it sold well, at least until a few years later when addiction cases started to crop up. Due to the chemical structure, diacetylmorphine (or just diamorphine) breaks down into ordinary morphine through the body’s system, but is particularly inclined to get access to the brain, crowning it readily as one of the kings of addiction, with only naloxone and methadone really able to readily combat the deleterious effects and addiction, respectively. A short-lived rush with permanently diminishing returns is the hallmark of heroin’s high, but the hours-long sedated ride afterward is an equal culprit for the mental addictions formed. The aforementioned diminishing returns result from the disruption of the brain’s natural opioid receptors, and require more and more of the drug to overpower, often leading to overdose-related deaths by respiratory arrest.
