The thirty years war was a series of religious wars that were obviously caused by religious tensions. The war began after the Holy Roman Emperor attempted to force its Bohemian subjects to return to the Roman Catholic church. They rebelled, and other religions joined in in the battles. The war-damaged economies and societies in places throughout Europe; for example over 1/3 of the German population was dead after the 3o years war. It also questioned the viability of Europe, as they all had strong militaries and were well armed. (4.1, 4.3)
