Surrender at Appomattox- April 9, 1865

On April 9th, 1865, near the town Appomattox Court House, Virginia, Confederate General Lee surrendered his army to General Ulysses S. Grant. Prior to the surrender, Lee and his troops left the Capitol of Richmond and tried to rally the remaining of the troops in North Carolina to resume fighting. The Union Army was ahead of their plan though, blocking their retreat and taking around 6,000 prisoners. About a month later, the Confederate troop of the Army of Northern Virginia was pretty much surrounded, and they made a last attempt to get out of the situation, which at first, deemed successful, but they ended up being hopelessly outnumbered. Lee decided to surrender instead of losing even more soldiers. So, Lee and Grant met up at one o’clock that afternoon.
