27 marzo 1857 anni - Dredd Scott v Sanford

Descrizione:

Dredd Scott v Sanford- March 1857
Dredd Scott was purchased as a slave to his new slave owner, Dr. Emerson, in St. Louis. Dr. Emerson brought Dredd with him to Illinois, Iowa and Fort Snelling in 1836. Dredd then married his wife at Fort Snelling. Because Minnesota was a free state, the Scott’s sued the government over his right to freedom, or at least his wife’s freedom because she was in MN and married to a slave. The court rules that Dredd wasn’t protected by the Constitution so he didn’t have a right to sue. They ruled that slaves couldn’t be made free just by entering a free state or territory. This ruling of the case was important because it gave the southern states freedom to make their own rules and laws.
