28 magg 1830 anni - Indian Removal Act

Descrizione:

When the United States gained more land through the Louisiana Purchase, white Americans/immigrants were scared of the Indians because they were "alien people", meaning they had never seen them before. At first, immigrants tried to convert Indians into Christianity and teach them their own traditions and morals. Although, the immigrants became greedy, and they wanted to have the Indian's lands because they were extremely fertile for growing crops such as cotton. Therefore, Andrew Jackson (through the federal government) forced them to leave through the Indian Removal Act. The hardships for Indians' did not stop with them being revoked from their land. Andrew Jackson (through the federal government) made Indians walk on foot for thousands of miles to a newly specified "Indian territory”; this became known as the “Trail of Tears”. The tribes that resisted relocation were forcefully removed with military troops. They were given a short amount of time to pack up their belongings, and begin their march westwards. Since the journey was by foot, Indians had to pack extremely lightly. Many Indians died along the way because they didn't have the necessities they needed to survive.
