Descrizione:
On April 13, 1919, around 10,000 Indians flocked to Amritsar to protest the Rowlatt Acts. Which the group of people was intended to fast, pray, and listen to political speeches at a huge festival in an enclosed square. The event took place at Amritsar, which is the major city in Punjab, the Indian holy city of the Sikh religion. However, the gathering crowd was unaware that the British government had banned public meeting. This event especially alarmed the British since they viewed this as a nationalism outburst. The two groups, Hindu Indian National Congress and the Muslim League in 1906 worked together toward gaining the independence from British. However, the British were treating the alliances as a threat. The British commander at Amritsar, Colonel Reginald Dyer thought the Indians were openly defying the ban, and due to such reasons, Dyer's troops surrounded the park, and he ordered the troops to fire the crowd without any warning. The shootings continued for ten minutes. The official reports showed nearly 400 Indians died, about 1200 were wounded. Such a sudden massacre killed a huge amount of people without any warnings. This causes the anger and stirred the feeling of nationalism by Indians across the country. It also has a very profound effect on Mohandas Gandhi, who was one of the majority movement leaders. He has actively supported the British and believes that India will be able to gain independence if they do so. However, he fully changes his mind after the Amritsar Massacre. He was convinced that India should only accept nothing than independence. Therefore, he worked on organizing the campaign of mass civil disobedience for defending against Britain's oppressive rule. I do believe this event is important since it leads to the boycotts, strikes, and even the Salt March. It's a very huge event that a lot of deaths were created, and a lot of Indians changed their thoughts and ideas about following British rule. They were once very obedient, but after the massacre, the majority of Indians were refuse to obey the British rule, and lead to the Civil Disobedience. Lastly, the Salt March, which shows British the eagerness and want of independence. The mindset and ideas changes within a short period of time, and the ideology of refusing to obey British rule also spread fastly. Therefore, this event is very significant and play a very important role in Indians gaining their independence.
