Jane Austen led a quiet, middle-class life with her family in Hampshire. Her novels are social comedies and the characters are generally from her own class. She observes their adventures and misadventures with affection but also with a critical, sometimes ironic eye.
Her best-known novels are "Sense and Sensibility", "Pride and Prejudice" and "Emma", all of which have been filmed. Jane Austen never married and died at the age of 42.
