After the wars with Lamanites were over, Amalikiah and his brother Ammoron being dead, Captain Moroni retired from military life. He had suffered a wound in battle and was likely weary of fighting.
So, he turned command of the armies over to his son, Moronihah. Moronihah was about 20 years old, but would have already been an experienced soldier for the people to agree to this.
