At the end of the Civil War, congress passed the thirteenth amendment, officially abolishing slavery. The amendment showed that the war was about slavery, and that now that the union had triumphed, it would be officially abolished. This amendment not only freed millions of slaves but would later lead to future civil rights measures because of the freed slaves.
