The Civil War the by far the most brutal war in American history, with more casualties than all previous wars combined. Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant were the most important general during the war, with Lee being a confederate and Grant being a part of the Union. The Union eventually won the war after General Lee surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse, but they still suffered heavy casualties. The war created a division in the nation that took decades to heal and is still healing in America today.
