7 agos 1964 anni - Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
Descrizione:
The Tonkin Gulf Resolution occurred after an incident on August 2, 1964, when North Vietnamese patrol boats shot torpedoes at a U.S. ship. The U.S. ship destroyed the torpedoes and came back later with another U.S. ship. The two ships thought that they were being torpedoed again and opened fire on North Vietnam. This second "attack" was proved to be unfounded. The Tonkin Gulf Resolution was legislation allowing the president (Lyndon B. Johnston) to "take all necessary measures to repel armed attack against the forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression," and was used to justify U.S. involvement in Vietnam to prevent the spread of Communism. This officially started U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War on August 7, 1964.
