When World War I was occurring and Europe's economy was in tatters, both the Central Powers and Allied Powers looked to the U.S. for supplies; showing that America was important and powerful. The U.S., seeing this incentive to trade as irresistible, decided to send supplies to both the Allied and the Central Powers. The Germans, after realizing that their best option was to sink American supply ships headed for the Allied Powers before they reached Britain, and began sinking ships. This along with the Germans telling Mexico to attack the United States caused America to join the Allied Powers in World War I on April 2, 1917. Though the U.S. joined the war late, they were still influential.
