In 1849, a military general ascended to the presidential position following the assassination of the Haitian President. After only a few weeks, Faustin declared himself Emperor of Haiti, establishing the second Haitian Empire.

He was able to consolidate his rule significantly over the small country until he started making aggressive actions towards Colombian Haiti.
