4 sett 1653 anni - Rule of Oliver Cromwell

Descrizione:

Oliver Cromwell was a noted Roundhead commander in the Civil War and was celbrated by many in England. 4 years after the execution of Charles I, he dissolved Parliament however and installed himself as Lord Protector by passing the Instrument of Government in 1653. As Lord Protector he was basically a sovereign ruler for life, just without the title of king. This reversal of parliamentary ideals alongside his strict Puritan rules led to the restoration of Charles II as the rightful ruler of England. Cromwell's legacy was a combination of increased parliamentary power and proof that there had to be balance and separation between the legislatur and the sovereign.
