Willie applied to Princeton with complete nonchalance. He went there before, and so did everyone in his family. He had nothing to worry about. He quit his job at the lounge, as he wouldn’t need it once he gets accepted. His mother would support him until then. The rest of his application stuck out like a sore thumb, however, as he had absolutely zero experience in any field remotely related to literature. It would have been no shock to anyone other than himself, then, to come home one night from the cocktail lounge to find his mother sitting in the living room, crying over a piece of paper. Willie walked over, somehow still oblivious, and grabbed the paper. On it was written “Dear Mr. Keith, we are sorry to inform you that we will be unable to offer you a place at Princeton University”. Willie slowly sat down on a sofa and dropped the paper. As he blankly stared into space, his gaze fell upon a portrait of his father. Flashbacks of lectures on his wasted opportunities and disappointed looks appeared in his mind. He thought of his dad’s final days, spent without his son who was spending his money to party on a boat halfway across the ocean while he lay there dying. It was in this moment that Willie realized that Jacob was correct to doubt him. Any sane person would do exactly that. Slowly, without saying a word to his mother, Willie walked upstairs and went to sleep. The next day he went back to the cocktail lounge to get his old job back.
