Willie had a lunch scheduled with a member of his fraternity in Princeton, a man named Jacob Grimsley who he had not seen since college and who was in town. Upon meeting Jacob he noticed immediately he had dressed to the occasion in a grey pinstripe suit while Willie was just wearing a white polo. This irked Willie and he did not know why. They sat down and began to catch up. Jacob enthusiastically informed Willie of his recent promotion to an executive position in sales at general motors. Almost thirty minutes were spent on his accomplishments since college. Willie nodded politely as he mentally prepared for the condescending sneer he would receive from Jacob if he said he had been working in a cocktail lounge ever since college. This was not an option, so when Jacob finally finished speaking and asked Willie what he had been up to, Willie replied that he was finishing up his PhD in literature at Princeton and had a job lined up teaching at Rutgers University once he was done. Jacob was impressed with Willie’s accomplishments, and told him that he was wrong about him, as when they were back in college most people believed Willie would never truly succeed. As they shook hands Jacob congratulated and apologized to Willie for his failure to believe in him, and they went their separate ways. Shocked that his peers’ insulting prediction for his life came true, Willie came home and announced to his mother that he would be going back to school.
