The battle of Ia Drang was the first major battle that the US had taken part in against the VC since they had joined the war. A US outfit had landed in the middle of a VC command post for three battalions. The battle lasted for 4 days before the VC left.
The VC learned that in order to be safe from the artillery they had to engage in close quarters fighting with US forces. The VC also learned that they could not take the US in a head to head fight and would have to resort to gorilla warfare tactics.
