*The Native Americans were stricken with evil “converters” assigned to them by the encomienda* and decided to rebel. Many joined together tribes under the rule of Chief Popé, rebelled in modern-day New Mexico and sieged the city of Santa Fe in 1680. Although the Spanish took back control in of Santa Fe in 1684, the Pueblo Revolt led to the end of the encomienda and the freedom of many enslaved Native Americans. Also, Native Americans gained religious freedom in Southwestern North America. Although some peoples were converts, the Pueblo Revolt and expulsion of encomienda led to cultural hybridity amongst Native tribes. Key Concept 1.2.I
