• Facts:
o AKA Middle East Respiratory Syndrome
o Immunosuppressant drugs, old or young, people with chronic conditions can increase the infection
o Fatality rate of 35.5% and the largest abundance of carriers is in Saudi Arabia
• Symptoms/Transmission:
o It is a new disease to humans that may have come from camels
o Spread through air droplets
o Fever, cough, shortness of breath, aches, diarrhea, nausea, malaise
• Treatment:
o No cures or vaccinations which means that an outbreak could happen any time, mostly just fluids
o Wash your hands, wear masks
o Avoid undercooked meat and wash your fruits
• Not Eradicated
• Historical Events:
o 2012: Discovered
o 2013, May - MERS becomes official name
o 2015, May - travel brought MERS to S. Korea starting an outbreak
o 2014 - first confirmed case in USA
