Despite advancements being made to increase African American rights, such as citizenship and voting rights for men, African Americans continued to encounter economic, social, and political problems. This was one of the main reasons why the march was organized.

The March on Washington helped lead to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This was because the march had caused the US government to take more action in regard to Civil Rights.
