Goldfur wakes Scorchflower up in the middle of the night for an emergency walk to the garden. Once they're there and sure no one has followed them, Goldfur reveals what Truestar did, his affair, how he killed Lightningstripe, how Ashstar killed him, and how Scorchflower is his granddaughter. Scorchflower is shocked, but her life suddenly makes sense. This explains why everyone looked at her differently, and why no one was willing to answer why. Goldfur says she knows how it feels to be kept in the dark, but says that her destiny is now completely hers.
