Muhammad was the founder of Islam. After an experience with the angel Gabriel, he spread the word of Allah, or God. Muhammad's stories were compiled into the Quran by his followers. Throughout his life, his teachings with both revered and feared, leading to his exile from his hometown of Mecca and his eventual return and conquering of it. Muhammad and his followers spread Islam to much of Arabia before his death and slightly unified these territories, paving the way for the four caliphs, the Umayyads, and the Abbasids to continue Islamic rule.
