17 gen 1881 anni - "His little Hearse like Figure"
Descrizione:
His little Hearse like Figure
Unto itself a Dirge
To a delusive Lilac
The vanity divulge
Of industry and ethics
And every founded thing
For the divine Perdition
Of idleness and spring -
This poem, written near Dickinson's passing, provides some unusual twists to Dickinson's previous expressions about industry, even turning some of them on their head with a nihilistic bent. "Industry and ethics" are vain, and "idleness" is "divine Perdition"; the reader seemingly cannot win, as the arrogant logic of life fades into the boredom of the afterlife. Yet perhaps it is not all bad--in the end there is a "spring."
