One of the more famous battles of the War of 1812. Based on the stunning defeat by Isaac Brock at Detroit the American public, and congress urged General Stephen Van Rensselaer (a U.S. general) to attack, and beat the British-Canadian force to save the Americans from embarrassment. Van Rensselaer opted to attack Queenston heights across the Niagara river. The initial attack was so poor that Brock believed the attack was coming from else where, but on the 13 the Americans found a secret path to the top of the escarpment. Following this path the Americans managed to seize the British gun emplacement. The U.S. seemed to be in control of the Battle. Awoken by gunfire Brock rushed to the heights, and rallied militia in a charge to route the Americans out of their gun emplacement. On the charge Brock was shot, and killed above the heart almost instantly. Following this the First Nations harrased the Americans while the small relief force arrived. The Americans were then encircled, and defeated. This battle was important as while Brock died his death bolstered the morale of the defending men who before Brock though Canada would fall easily. Now his death fortified the Canadian-British spirit into defence.
