1 gen 1971 anni - Fela Kuti releases "Why Black Man Dey Suffer" and "Black Man's Cry"

Descrizione:

These were Fela Kuti's first two political albums. He released them after his visit to the United States, where he began to have a better understanding of the meaning of Black Diaspora and collective black struggle. Sandra Smith Izadore, a member of the Black Panther Party and one of Fela's lovers, is credited with introducing Fela to the history of Africa and notions of Black Power. After the visit he changes the name of his music group from Koola Lobitos ("cool cat") to Afrika 70 and shifts his musical focus on Panafricanism and, more specifically, the conditions in Nigeria at the time.

These two albums were not very successful as Fela struggled to articulate the problems and racism he had experienced and was seeing. However, they do mark an important turning point and that is why they should be recognized as significant.
