A slave revolt occurred and after hesitating for a couple of weeks, Loverture helped his former master escape and joined the black forces who were burning plantations and killing Europeans and people of mixed African and European Ancestry. He realized that some of the rebel leaders were willing to compromise with the Europeans, a viewpoint that he did not share, so he formed his own army and trained them in guerrilla warfare.
