The Fourteenth Amendment is the amendment that constitutionally ensured the citizenship of all persons born or naturalized in the United States. African Americans, even former slaves, were finally constitutionally promised their rights, which was even more monumental than the Civil Rights Act of 1866. This amendment gave many citizens, blacks and whites alike, a new hope for reconstruction efforts.
