The Civil War was a war essentially over slavery and a strive for unity. The North (union) was full of free states and wanted to maintain unity with the South (confederacy) which was full of slave states that refused to give up slavery because slavery was the basis of their economy. The South lagged far behind in technological innovations and industry, so they believed giving up slavery would ruin their economy and lifestyle. The main cause of the civil war was the dispute over the economic system of slavery and the topic of states' rights. The Civil War resulted in emphasis on democracy, abolition of slavery and unification of the United States of America.
