Rommel had arrived at Arras on May 20th, 1940. General Hermann Hoth had received orders to isolate the city, and bypass it. He ordered the 7th Panzer Division to the east, and the 5th Panzer Division to the West. The British launched a counter-attack, and was defeated by the SS Totenkoph Division. The British withdrew, and left the city.
