Despite President Jefferson's strict interpretation of the Constitution due to his Anti-Federalist background, he bought the Lousiana territory from Napoleon of France even without specific authorization from the Constitution. He claimed that it was of the president's duty to sign treaties. This purchase helped further Jefferson's ideal view of an agrarian utopian United States with this increased land area.
