John Brown was anti-slavery. He got white allies and free blacks together and raided a government arsenal in Harpers Ferry, Virginia. The main goal of this raid was to get weapons and give them out to slaves in the South so that they could start their own uprisings. Brown was able to capture the arsenal, but soldiers under the command of Robert E. Lee forced him to surrender. Brown was executed for treason but became a martyr for the abolitionist cause. This was a contribution to the Civil War, because it caused tension between the slaves and the owners. The slaves were thought to be savages, thus making them less human and ignoring mostly all of their rights.
