The Republican Party was formed in March. It was united in opposing the Kansas-Nebraska Act and in keeping slavery out of the territories. But otherwise there was a wide range of opinions. Republican Party had their opponent in the 1856 election. They didn't won, but it did show that they had a political force in the North.
