The Panama Canal went from the hands of the French, who lost many men to diseases like yellow fever, to the US. Yellow fever, though now rare among travelers, causes chills, fever, vomiting, yellow skin and other symptoms; the cause was not known at first until proven by US doctor Walter Reed and his team were sent to investigate. On August 27th though one such colleague, James Carroll allowed a mosquito to bite him and got deathly ill with yellow fever, allowing for Reed to prove the insects were connected to the spread.
