This idea that a believer was saved by faith wasn’t a new idea, the Catholic church had been saying this for years, but the idea that it was only faith and could be found outside of the church was revolutionary. The Catholic church would say that this faith is by the church, something you can contribute to, and is a process, but faith alone, first widely promoted by Luther, says no to all those things. It reduced the power of the church by saying salvation was instantaneous, it didn’t need to happen through the church, and towards it you contributed nothing. (Palmer 79-80 and Notes)
