This edict proclaimed shortly after Henry IV took the throne of France put an end to the civil war and religious strife in France. It gave protections to Protestants in France and allowed them to have civil and military rights as citizens. This event is more important that the Peace of Alais in 1629 because it assured everyone in France that Protestants and Catholics could live within one nation, a question much debated, whereas Alais slightly disenfranchised the Protestants from their military rights but didn’t accomplish much else.
