After his DNA matched the evidence found under Holly's fingernails, Briere pleaded guilty to Rape and First-Degree murder. He described his crime as "Cruel, Inhuman, and Nightmarish". He received an automatic life sentence and will not be eligible for bail for 25 years. He also admitted to viewing child pornography before he kidnapped Holly.
