In 1580 king Philip II seized the portuguese throne which granted him an empire that circled the globe. With the increase in land and power came an increase in wealth and soon Spain was able to support a standing army of 50,000 men. This wealth went towards more than just the military and building palaces though, it also allowed Spanish nobles to become patrons of the arts. Because of the newly found wealth and patrons this time became a golden age for the arts in Spain.
