Otherwise known as Pixar, for short, all began in 1979 when George Lucas (the creator of Indiana Jones and Star Wars) recruited Ed Catmull from the New York Institute of Technology to head Lucasfilm’s Computer Division, a group charged with developing state-of-the-art computer technology for the film industry. Lucas had big ideas for the future of animation, specifically with his own set of goals: a digital (nonlinear) film editing system, a digital (nonlinear) sound editing system, a laser film printer, and further exploration of computer graphics.
Pixar today is one of the most well-known computer animation companies in the world. It is owned by Walt Disney Studios and the two often collaborate to create animated shorts.
