Congress declares war on Britain and their allies in hopes to put an end to the British practice of impressment and stop Indian attacks along the western frontier. The British government promised to stop interfering with American shipping, but Monroe felt that only war would actually stop this practice. This declaration of war marks the first time that Congress used their power to declare war.
