He theorized that electricity was comprised of negative particles he called electrons. He started out as a philosopher and was very well educated in the kinetic theory of gases and physics. He predicted the number of molecules in the volume of gas under normal conditions and this is how he found and estimated the electric charge of the gas. It ended up being incorrect but he was the first to theorize electrons with electricity and that the electrons were negative.
