The Sistine Chapel was built and is used to be a meeting place for cardinals to elect a new pope. After it had been built in 1417 Michelangelo was hired to paint the interior of the chapel. Every inch of the ceiling is covered in frescoes depicting various religious scenes. While painting the ceiling Michelangelo had to paint laying on his back and painting above him. Before painting the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo was known for sculpture and architecture but not well known for his painting. The Sistine chapel was the start of Michelangelo’s career as a famous painter.
