The Erie Canal was the first major system of transportation in America. It stretched 363 miles to connect the Atlantic Ocean through the Hudson River and ran all the way to Lake Erie. This was extremely important because it facilitated interstate trade and made the nation more connected, which helped the spread of ideas and cultures.
