Lincoln ran for the U.S. Senate seat that was currently being held by Douglas. Abraham spoke his opinion on how slaves should be considered free and was listened to because he was known for his words. Douglas then fired back with racist attacks toward Lincoln. Douglas was reelected when he won the majority.
