The novel Bridget Jones’s Diary was written by British novelist Helen Fielding. The novel follows a thirty-year-old woman named Bridget Jones, whose life revolves around trying to lose weight and find love. She uses the new year to vow to lose weight, improve her career, stop smoking, and find a boyfriend. The novel won British Book of the Year in 1998. The novel (and the second novel) have been published in forty countries and sold over fifteen million copies. The novel was also adapted into a movie and achieved worldwide success. It was named as one of the ten novels that best defined the 20th century. Fielding quoted the novel as being “more than just single life, but “the gap between how we feel we are expected to be and how we actually are” which she has described as an alarming symptom of the media age.
